The RV Manufacturing Dream: Technology Meets Mobility

TL;DR
Karen and I live and work full-time in a travel trailer, and almost every piece of technology that makes that possible was added after it left the factory: the lithium batteries, the inverter and charger, the cellular and satellite internet, the desks. The RV industry still builds for weekend campers while a growing number of us need a home office that moves. My vision for a technology-first RV manufacturer is simple: power designed as a system, connectivity built in, monitoring data the owner controls, and components you can repair yourself, with no subscription required.
The Current State of RV Technology, From the Inside
The RV industry is ripe for technological disruption. I am not saying that from a conference stage. I am saying it from a desk inside a 2016 Northwood Arctic Fox 31D that we call the BigFox.
Here is what it took to turn a well-built trailer into a place two people can live and work full-time. None of it came from the factory:
- Power: an off-grid system built on Battle Born lithium batteries and Victron Energy components, housed in a bed platform I designed myself.
- Connectivity: Peplink routing across Starlink and cellular, because my job does not care where we parked.
- Workspace: two desks and an IT and storage center where the factory put bunk beds and a sofa.
Most RVs are still built around electrical systems sized for a weekend of lights, a water pump, and a furnace fan, not for laptops, monitors, networking gear, and a full workday. The technology we carry in our pockets is a decade ahead of the technology built into the walls around us.
My Vision for Smart RV Manufacturing
Imagine an RV designed from the ground up for people who actually live in it. This isn't about adding gadgets. It's about reimagining what mobile living can be.
Power as a system, not a parts list. Solar, battery, alternator, and shore power designed together from day one, with a controller that knows tomorrow's forecast and your usage patterns, and plans the day around both.
Monitoring the owner controls. Tanks, batteries, tire pressure, temperatures, and leak sensors in one interface, with predictive maintenance alerts. And here is the part the industry will not like: the data belongs to the owner and works without a cloud account. I have spent too many years in security to want my home reporting my location to a vendor.
Connectivity-first design. Antenna mounts, cable runs, and a ventilated equipment space built in at the factory, so nobody has to drill through a roof they are trying to keep dry.
The Manufacturing Opportunity
Remote work created a new kind of RV buyer: people who want to travel without giving up their careers. We are not weekend campers, and we notice every corner a manufacturer cut, because we live with it every day.
Repairable, not rented. The easy business model for a “smart” RV is a subscription: pay monthly for connectivity, monitoring, and features the hardware already has. I think that is exactly wrong. The opportunity is an RV built with standard parts, published wiring diagrams, and systems the owner can fix at a campground without a dealer appointment.
Technical Challenges and Solutions
- Power efficiency: every electronic system has to earn its watts. That means careful component selection and power management designed in, not bolted on.
- Durability: constant vibration, temperature swings, and moisture destroy consumer electronics. Ruggedized components and strain relief on every connection are not optional.
- Serviceability: when technology fails on the road, it needs to be replaceable quickly. Modular design and diagnostics the owner can read become essential.
The Service Ecosystem and the Environment
A technology-forward manufacturer would not just build vehicles. It would support mobile technicians who can service a rig wherever it is parked, backed by diagnostics that tell them what is wrong before they arrive, and a community where owners share fixes openly.
It would also build for longevity. The most sustainable RV is the one that is still on the road in twenty years. Durable, recyclable materials, combined with solar and battery systems capable enough for real off-grid living, reduce both the environmental footprint and the dependence on campground hookups.

- Integrated monitoring with owner-controlled data
- Connectivity designed in for remote work
- Repairable, modular systems with published documentation
- Durable, sustainable materials built for decades, not seasons
The convergence of remote work, capable technology, and changing ideas about home creates a real opportunity to reimagine RV manufacturing. While I haven't yet found the right opportunity to pursue this vision, I believe it represents one of the most exciting intersections of technology and lifestyle available today.
